May 25th: Self-Care for Community Care: Listening for Our Needs and Learning How to Meet Them

What role does self-care play in shaping our relationships with our loved ones and wider communities? How do we balance our needs and the needs of others? This can be harder than we think. Sometimes we find ourselves in relationships or difficult conversations where listening is a one-way street. At other times, we realize that we have prioritized everyone else's needs and perspectives before ours. Some of us dream of finding careers, relationships, and pursuits that we find meaningful while living lives that meet everyone else's expectations rather than our own. At these times, listening to ourselves can be hard. Our own inner voices may be drowned out by social expectations or our fears of losing connection with those around us. The most difficult conversations can be the ones we avoid having with ourselves. This workshop provides tools and frameworks for getting in touch with our needs and finding out what really matters to us so that we can find the courage to pursue what we most want while retaining our connection to our wider communities.

June 1st: Making Requests and Saying No: Learning our Capacities and Boundaries as a form of Community Care

This workshop will provide participants with skills in making requests that they find difficult to make and to say no without losing connection with others. The simple act of asking for support or saying no can be fraught with emotions. On the one hand, we may find it hard to make requests out of fear of hearing a no or for being judged for asking. On the other hand, we may avoid saying no out of fear of damaging a relationship or facing the fallout of others' reactions, leading us to do things we don't want to, at the cost of our well-being. This workshop teaches participants skills in distinguishing requests from demands and asking for support and saying no in a connected way.
