Nigel Poor is the co-creator and co-host of the Pulitzer and Peabody nominated podcast Ear Hustle which features stories of the daily realities of life inside California’s San Quentin State Prison and well as stories about life post incarceration.  

Nigel is also a visual artist and educator. In 2021 she published two books, “The San Quentin Project” (Aperture) which explores a largely unseen visual record of daily life inside prison, while demonstrating how an archive of the state is now being used to teach visual literacy and process the experience of incarceration.

Along with her Ear Hustle co-creator, Earlonne Woods, she co-authored “This is Ear Hustle” (Crown) which shares the stories of how Nigel and Earlonne came to San Quentin and together created their award-winning podcast under extremely challenging circumstances. The book also presents the full and often surprising realities of prison life as told by currently and formerly incarcerated people.
